Ocular Toxoplasmosis Vaccine for South America

2024 Jul, TueNews

Ocular Toxoplasmosis is a public health problem across south america. In Colombia, 6% of the population in Quindio department have retinal scarring infection. This parasite can continue to destroy the retina over time, even after the acute phase of the infection has passed, and there is no efficient treatment available. 🦠️🦠️🦠️

We are pleased and proud to share excellent data obtained through our collaboration with Jorge Enrique Gómez Marín from Universidad del Quindío to develop a treatment which blocks the reactivation of Toxoplasmosis. 👨‍⚕️

This is the first study to show that the toxoplasmosis vaccine activates memory T-cells of ocular toxoplasmosis patients ex Vivo. This activation then blocks the reactivation of the parasite, Jorge’s work has provided not only crucial insights for futures clinical trials, but also significant hope for a treatment of this disease.
