A newly published study in Pharmaceutics provides fresh insight into the immune mechanisms behind VXN-Toxo, our intranasal vaccine based on maltodextrin nanoparticles targeting Toxoplasma gondii.
Building on an earlier global vaccination campaign conducted in zoological parks, which demonstrated strong efficacy across multiple species and regions, this new research examined the cellular immune response in C57BL/6 mice.
The findings are clear: VXN-Toxo triggers a robust, antigen-specific T-cell response, marked by strong production of IFN-γ and IL-17, even against T. gondii strains different from the one used for vaccination (types I, II, III, and atypical strains). Flow cytometry analysis further revealed activation of both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, including IFN-γ–producing central and effector memory cells.
These results reinforce VXN-Toxo’s potential as a vaccine candidate offering broad, cross-strain protection, with promising applications in both human and veterinary medicine.
